Tunes for beginners francais
Welcome to the tunes for beginners' section.

This area of the site is being overhauled and improved, a task that started in July  2020. As the overhaul takes place the old images and playback files will be left below so that if you are using them, you can continue to do so.

Eventually, to the right,  you will see an index of beginner  tunes which are on this page below. These tunes are being selected and prepared to be easy and suitable for beginners. You shoul dsimly enjoy playing along with them. As you get better and more cofortable with your technique, then you will want to go to the more advanced section where the tunes have midi generated files playing at half and quarter speed too. This is how you will advance.

More tunes for bands and more advanced learners with points of discussion and midi files can be found in the Bands and MAP tunes section of teachyouselfbagpipes. This is a collection of nearly sixty tunes. It will be restructured into a more traditional type of library in 2021.

There is also a collection of smallpipe tunes available by clicking here.

Here, in the beginners section. these tunes have been arranged the tunes according to difficulty, from the easiest.

The idea is that you learn one or two tunes a week, and that after one month you can progress to the next level.

Each tune can be downloaded and printed as a jpeg.

It is a good idea to keep practicing your exercises whilst you are learning these tunes.

When you have learned these entry level tunes, you will be ready to go to the menu on the right, where the tunes have been listen according to difficulty.

Tunes marked * were composed by Lindsay Davidson.

For more tunes at all levels, printable as jpegs, please look at Lindsay Davidson's
tune library, featuring a few hundred tunes of all types and difficulty level as jpegs and pdfs for free download.

In time, each tune here will have a youtube video with teh music and Lindsay DAvidson aying either on a practise chanter
or chamber pipes (McCallum folkpipes - a great way to play quietoy if you live in an apartment block)

Where there are midi files, please remember the "magic maxim" - if you can play slowly, you can play quickly but the converse isn't necessarily true. This means as you get better you should try to play with an awareness of twice as much detail, then four times as much detail etc.

To this end, extra beats have been given in the midi files to help you keep count. This will be further explained in intermediate work in due course.
Once you get the idea, it is easy, but please listen carefully to figure it out.
