On medieval bagpipes it is possible to attain part of a second octave. This is achieved by two actions together; blowing slightly harder and 'pinching' thethumb hole at the top. This means half closing the hole at the top with your thumb. The fingering for the extra notes you can reach in this way is the same as for an octave lower, with the exception that the thumb hole is pinched.
